NORDIC WALKING MAKES BIG STRIDES
Four summers ago, the Beaver Creek Hiking Center became the first center of its kind in North America to introduce Nordic Walking into their summer program line-up with equipment provided by LEKI. Ninety-minute tours include stretching, strength training and an overall cardiovascular focus. Group tours are offered daily by reservation only. Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance. A two-person minimum is required for the group tour to take place. Nordic Walking was adapted from cross-country skiing and incorporates specially designed poles with fitness walking. The sport was introduced in Finland in 1997 and has been rapidly growing across Europe. Nordic Walking is credited with helping participants to burn more calories during a walk, increase energy consumption, reduce stress to knees and lower joints, increase upper body strength and reduce heel strike force.
