Town/Resort Life

Vail was founded as a ski resort in 1962 and incorporated as a town in 1966. In its early years during the 1870s the area attracted gold and silver miners, which eventually led to sheep ranching and a lettuce growing community. During World War II the Army’s Tenth Mountain Division trained their troops in the area. Named for Charlie Vail, a state highway engineer who brought the first highway to the area in the 1930s, Vail today is recognized around the globe as an international ski destination thanks to the vision of Pete Seibert, a Tenth Mountain Division soldier who trained nearby in Camp Hale and Earl Eaton, a local uranium prospector.

Vail currently is in the midst of a Billion Dollar Renewal where revitalization is occurring in all corners of the community. To date the community already has invested in $183 million to refurbish hotel rooms and upgrade facilities including spas, dining and shops, not to mention community facilities. In total, more than 100 new lodge units and 9,250 square feet of retail space are open now or will be in late 2006. On the horizon, another 130 lodge units and 40,000 square feet of new retail space are in the works, scheduled to be completed in the next two years. Strolling through the villages, the energy is infectious and few resorts can compare to the luxury and vibrancy that already exists in Vail. The resort remains at the forefront in offering new technology and enhanced vacation experiences.
