BEAVER CREEK RESORT

SUMMER 2008: ADVENTURE

HIKINGCENTER HIGHLIGHTS: The Beaver Creek Hiking Center recently introduced Historic Excursion “drive and hike” adventures to its lineup of guided options. The tours offer a peek at some of Colorado’s most picturesque historic mining and ghost towns including Minturn, Holy Cross City, Leadville, Red Cliff, and Hagerman Pass. Historic Excursion group tours are offered once a week and are low-intensity, providing the perfect day trip for outdoor and history enthusiasts of all ages and levels. The Beaver Creek Hiking Center offers a full menu of outdoor options ranging from 14er hikes to guided mountain bike tours to supported European treks.

INTERNATIONAL CYCLING RETURNS TO VAIL AND BEAVER CREEK: The world’s best cyclists will once again take center stage in the Vail Valley August 22-24, following a twenty-year hiatus, as the Vail Valley Foundation brings the inaugural Colorado Stage International Cycle Classic to the streets of Vail and Beaver Creek. The field, comprised of top Pro Tour teams, National teams and Pro Continental and Continental teams, will compete in a trio of races during the weekend, including a road race, a stage race and a time trail. The Colorado Stage will also feature a citizen’s ride and major cycling expo as part of the overall festivities. The opening day’s 130-mile road race will begin in Breckenridge, finishing in the heart of Beaver Creek Village. Day two will feature the circuit race, with between 7 and10, 8.5 mile loops in and around Vail Village, while the final day’s competition will hearken back to the days of the Coors Classic with the traditional time trial course from Vail Village to the East Vail cul-de-sac.

MILES OF MOUNTAINS TO CONQUER: The much-anticipated Colorado Eagle River Ride returns to the Vail Valley July 27, and starts and ends in Beaver Creek. This scenic ride takes participants along the Eagle and Colorado Rivers and promises a comparatively forgiving course – most Colorado 100 courses feature a lot of climbing. Contestants can choose from a 100-mile, 100-kilometer, or 42-mile course. All courses take riders through the Eagle River Valley up the rural setting of Highway 131 and along the mighty Colorado River. The Colorado Eagle River Ride is a fund-raiser for the Snowboard Outreach Society (SOS), a local not-for-profit organization that provides high quality recreation programs to underserved youth. ☼ The East West Resorts XTerra Off-Road Triathlon is coming to Beaver Creek for the first time on August 9. Stay tuned for more information. ☼ The GORE-TEX™ Trans Rockies Run returns to Beaver Creek August 14. This six-day, 125-mile stage trail run through the Colorado Rockies begins in Beaver Creek, passes through Leadville and ends in Aspen. Up to 350 teams of two will take to the trails, covering some of the most spectacular terrain in the world. The race is fully supported, and includes a mix of singletrack and forest road with nearly 25,000 feet of elevation gain – reaching altitudes of 12,000 feet. ☼ Individuals or teams of two can participate in Beaver Creek’s Vertical Assent Running Race on August 23. Participants run or hike up the Overlook trail on Beaver Creek Mountain, then ride the chairlift down to the village, completing as many laps as possible within six hours. ☼ Beaver Creek’s Oktoberfest Shuffle returns as part of the Oktoberfest celebration on August 31. Enjoy autumn’s splendor by participating in this 5k or 10k trail hike/run. All net proceeds benefit the Vail Valley Medical Center.
