The cartoon characters are celebrating one year as the resort’s official faces of safety and will be serving birthday cake and hosting special events during National Safety Awareness Week in Beaver Creek from Jan. 19-25.
Harry and Milli are the creation of Beaver Creek Ski School instructor Marc McDonald and received recognition last year from the National Ski Area Association for being outstanding safety role models. McDonald’s characters use fun and positive messages to educate kids and adults about Your Responsibility Code and skiing and riding safely on the mountain.
Harry and Milli invite kids and adults for a birthday bash and celebration of mountain safety with a full schedule of activities and events in Beaver Creek:

Saturday, Jan. 19
“Sweep” with Ski Patrol, Patrol Headquarters at the top of the Cinch Express Lift (#8), 3:00 p.m., open to all, no registration necessary.
Family Safety Fair, Spruce Saddle Lodge, 12 p.m.-3 p.m. - Meet representatives from Eagle County Safety Alliance. “Think First” helmet checks, displays and helmet giveaways. - Canine avalanche rescue demonstrations with Beaver Creek Ski Patrol and avalanche dogs Dixie and Blu. - Skier safety tips, hat and gift certificate giveaways by the Beaver Creek Yellow Jackets safety team. - Snow-cat, snowmobile, and snowmaking demonstrations.
Meet Harry & Milli, Children’s Ski School, Buckaroo Express Gondola and Jackrabbit Alley - Marc McDonald, the creator of Harry and Milli, will autograph Harry and Milli posters and postcards and will sketch characters on children’s helmets. Harry and Milli collector buttons will be given away.
Park Education and Progression, Lumber Yard terrain park near Spruce Saddle Lodge , 1 p.m. - Ski School and Park Crew will give a free class and demonstrations on park safety. Sunday, Jan. 20

Canine avalanche rescue demonstrations, Patrol Headquarters and base of Centennial Lift - Beaver Creek Ski Patrol members Dixie and Blu visit with kids, pose for photos and demonstrate theirskills.

Wednesday, Jan. 23
Avalanche and Backcountry Awareness Classroom Session, 9 a.m.-10 a.m. - Patrol Headquarters at top of Cinch Express Lift, sign ups required by calling 845-6610 - Includes beacon and route finding work for beginners and experienced backcountry enthusiasts in the new Beacon Bowl training park from 10 a.m.-11 a.m.
Beacon Search Contest, Red Tail Camp, 1 p.m.-2 p.m. - Must have participated in morning backcountry session to participate. - The winner of the contest will receive a free beacon.
Kids Tubing, Base of Haymeadow Lift, 4:30 p.m. - Complimentary, supervised snow tubing for ages 5-12. Tubes are provided.
Thursday, Jan. 24
Avalanche and Backcountry Awareness Workshop, Avon Public Library, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. - Ski enthusiasts looking for assistance in backcountry safety prior to their trips can attend a complimentary Avalanche and Backcountry Awareness workshop. - The workshop will focus on snow physics, route selection, evaluating snow stability, beacons, and avalanche phenomenon and rescue techniques. - The classes are led by members of Beaver Creek’s Ski Patrol team who volunteer their time to help prepare backcountry skiers, snowboarders and explorers for the winter wilderness experience. Rail Jam Series for kids and adults, 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. - Open to ages seven and up. No experience needed. Meet in front of Beaver Creek Children’s Ski and Snowboard School.
Thursday Night Lights Glowstick Ski-Down and Fireworks Display, 5:30 p.m. - Register at the Beaver Creek Children’s Ski and Snowboard School. - Ski Patrol and Yellow Jackets will celebrate NSAA individual poster contest winners, as well as announce overall Beaver Creek poster contest winners. Prizes will be awarded.

In addition, look for the safety tip of the day displayed on all electronic signboards, lift callboards, grooming reports and on the Mountain Journal throughout the week. Beaver Creek Sports will offer a 20 percent discount on helmet purchases from Jan. 19-25.
